Midview Softball tops Columbia 12-3

Midview Varsity Softball defeated visiting Columbia High School 12-3 in non-league action Wednesday (May 6) evening.

Prior to the game, Midview celebrated the newly-renovated, all-turf facility's grand opening. Representatives of the Ross Foundation and Cromling family participated in a ribbon cutting, while Middie Head Coach Cassie Haight '16 caught a ceremonial first pitch from junior Savannah Holcomb

Holcomb (13-4) struck out a season-high 12 batters while allowing three runs on five hits with three walks in the win. Midview's offense, meanwhile, collected 16 hits on the day. It was the team's 10th double-digit hit performance of the season.

The Raiders took the early momentum with a two-run top of the first. Sophomore Jillian Vandersluis (2-for-4) got the Middies on the board with a RBI single in the bottom of the frame. Midview then took the lead in the second. Freshman Hailey Dye had a sacrifice fly, and junior Dezirae Thomas (4-for-5) added a RBI single. Columbia tied the game at 3-3 in the third, before Midview took the lead on a two-run single by junior Savannah Presser (4-for-4) later that inning. Senior Nina Ballachino (3-for-4) added a RBI single in the fourth. Holcomb contributed a run-scoring single and Ballachino a two-run double in a four-run fifth. Sophomore Olivia Price then drove in a run with a single and Thomas added another RBI hit to complete the scoring in the sixth.

Midview (17-6) has added a home game against Elyria Catholic High School on Tuesday (May 12) at 5 p.m. The Panthers rallied to beat the Middies 8-7 on March 24.
