Magnificat edges Midview Softball 10-9
It was déjà vu for the Midview Varsity Softball team, as it failed to hold a two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh for the second straight game, which resulted in a 10-9 loss to host Magnificat High School on Wednesday (March 25) evening.
The Middies jumped out to a 4-0 advantage, when junior Dezirae Thomas launched a grand slam in the top of the second frame. The Blue Streaks got on the board with single runs in the third and fourth innings. An RBI double by junior Savannah Presser extended the lead to 5-2 in the fifth. The lead grew to seven runs in the sixth, when junior Savannah Holcomb hit a sacrifice fly and then senior Nina Ballachino delivered a three-run bomb to make it 9-2.
Magnificat, however, scored the final eight runs—five in the sixth and three in the seventh—for the walk-off victory. It was the same fate the Middies suffered a day ago at Elyria Catholic.
Presser finished with three of the team's seven hits. Holcomb got the start on the mound and allowed seven runs (six earned) on five hits with eight strikeout and two walks over 5 innings. Sophomore Jillian Vandersluis (0-2) took the loss after giving up three unearned runs on three hits with one walk and one strikeout over the final one and one-third frames.
Midview (1-2) will regroup and then returnt to action on Saturday (March 28) at Brookside High School. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
