Midview Softball routs host Strongsville 11-0 in season opener

Junior Dezirae Thomas drove in four runs on three hits and scored four runs to lead Midview Varsity Softball past host Strongsville High School 11-0 Saturday (March 21) afternoon. It was both team's season opener.
 
The Middies out hit the Mustangs 15-1 over the five-inning game. All nine Midview starters got into the action with at least one hit. 
 
Thomas had a three-run double in the second inning and a RBI single in the third. She capped off her day with a triple in the fifth.
 
Senior Nina Ballachino added a two-run double in the second to help the Middies build a 5-0 advantage. Sophomore Brooke Cleary and Thomas had RBI singles in the third, which extended the lead to 7-0. The Middies' final four runs came in the fifth. Junior Savannah Holcomb had a sacrifice fly, before Savannah Presser plated two when her fly ball to left was dropped. Sophomore Jillian Vandersluis finished off the scoring with a double, her second of the game.
 
Holcomb (1-0) earned the win on the mound. The starter surrendered zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out five and walking one. Vandersluis tossed two innings of shutout ball in relief. She surrendered one hit, struck out three and walked none.
 
The Middies (1-0) are back in action at Elyria Catholic High School on Tuesday (March 24) at 5 p.m.
