Midview Football Travels to Avon Lake in Week 5

Who: Midview High School (3-1, 0-1 SWC) and Avon Lake High School (2-2, 1-0 SWC)

What: Week 5 OHSAA Southwestern Conference Varsity Football Game

Where: Avon Lake's Memorial Stadium (175 Avon Belden Rd, Avon Lake, OH 44012)

When: Kickoff is Friday (September 20) at 7 p.m.

Tickets: All Tickets are General Admission and $8. Everyone Kindergarten age to 59 years of age must have a ticket in order to enter. Senior Citizens (60+) are also admitted free regardless of where they live. Special Events: It is Homecoming Weekend in Shoremen Country.

Haltime Performance: The Midview High School Marching Blue will perform first, followed by the Avon Lake High School Marching Band.

Last Meeting: Avon Lake dominated Midview en route to a 48-7 win in week 5 of the 2023 season. Dior Jones had 3 catches for 60 yards and 1 TD in the loss.

2023 Records: Midview finished 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the Southwestern Conference, while Avon Lake went 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the SWC. The Middies lost 49-7 at Highland High School in the first round of the OHSAA Division II Playoffs. The Shoremen defeated Fremont Ross High School 40-14 in round one then fell to Anthony Wayne High School 59-14 in the second round of the same playoffs.

Midview's Last Game: Midview's last-second attempt to rally past visiitng Amherst Steele came up a few yards short and the Comets won 21-16. Junior Shay Williams completed 25-of-34 passes for 372 yards and 2 TDs. Senior Dior Jones had 9 catches for 195 yards in the loss. Junior Brayden Homoki led his team in tackles for the fourth straight game and finished with 19 total stops. [Recap].

Avon Lake's Last Game: Avon Lake rallied past Berea-Midpark High School 36-35 in week 4. Aiden Stewart caught 9 passes for 99 yards and 3 TDs. He also ran back a kickoff for a score.

Midview Head Coach: Head Coach Jack Armstrong is now 7-8 in his second season leading the Middies. Armstrong, a 2012 graduate of Midview High School, is a Special Education Coordinator at his alma mater and has served as a varsity assistant coach with the Middies for six of the previous seven seasons before taking over. He is the just the eighth coach in program history, which dates back to the consolidation of Belden, Eaton and Grafton high schools in 1955.

Avon Lake Head Coach: Head Coach Matt Kostelnik is 60-24 in his eighth year leading the Shoremen.

Midview Stat Leaders: Junior quarterback Shay Williams has completed 39-of-61 (63.9%) passes and thrown for 530 yards with 4 TDs and 1 INT. He also has 58 carries for 174 yards and 2 TDs. Junior Marcus McMahon has 34 carries for 183 yards and 2 TDs, and junior Michael Passerrello Jr. has 35 carries for 170 yards and 1 TD. Senior Dior Jones leads the receving corps with 13 catches for 274 yards and 1 TD, while McMahon has added 9 catches for 64 yards and 1 TD. Junior Brayden Homoki leads the team with 69 total tackles, while senior Wyatt Lehman has added 36 total tackles on the year. [Complete Stats]

Returning Lettermen: Midview returned 17 letterwinners from a year ago, including All-SWC first team junior running back/defensive back Michael Passerrello Jr.

SWC Non-Conference Success: The 8 SWC teams combined to go 17-7 over the first three weeks. [Standings]

Playoffs Outlook: Midview currently sits fifth in Division III Region 10, while Avon Lake is 11th in Division II Region 6 through week 4 of the season. The top 16 of each region once again make the playoffs in 2024.
