Bio
For all the great athletes and coaches that have competed or coached at Midview or its’ predecessors, there is one name synonymous with Midview sports. That name is Ed Adelsberg. And because of his near 60-year association with the school district in various athletic roles, Ed is recognized in the Special Category by the Midview Athletic Hall of Fame.
Ed came to the Midview district in 1959 after serving in the US Army following his graduation from St. Francis College in Pennsylvania. As became his trademark, Adelsberg dove into his responsibilities, teaching in the classroom and immersing himself on the athletic side as well, serving as an assistant coach on the freshmen football staff and freshmen basketball coach as well. Ed taught and coached through 1967, and then in 1968 he moved into the position of Athletic Director, a role he would hold for a remarkable 23 years, until his retirement in 1991. In a career with many milestones, his greatest achievement may have been navigating the Middies through the turbulent “pay to play” period which began in 1986. His guidance during those difficult times kept the Midview athletic programs alive and thriving. Following his retirement, Ed stepped up and again assisted the district as it encountered the challenges of “pay to play”.
While he had stepped aside from Midview full-time, Adelsbergs’ retirement certainly didn’t bring his work and passion for the district to an end. Ed continued to assist for three more decades in numerous ways. He remained in the district as a substitute teacher, was an annual presence at the Division 1 boys basketball tournament that he had guided himself for many years, was a founding member of MAHOF, and assisted in any other endeavor the bore the Midview name.
In 1994 the stadium where the Middies compete was named in his honor. The name of Ed Adelsberg will always be on that great facility. Eds’ love of teaching, coaching, and all things Midview, will always be remembered as well.
