Phil Sheffield graduated from Bowling Green with a B.S. in Education in 1959, a milestone year for him. He married his wife Carole in ‘59 and became an assistant coach at Amherst, where he served for six years. The team won a Lakeland championship in his second year on the staff. He went to Clearview as an assistant coach in 1965 and was named head coach the following season. He put together a 29-14-6 record at Clearview and won another Lakeland title in 1968.

Phil Sheffield was successful from the moment he set foot on the practice field as Midview’s head football coach in 1971. His teams finished second in the Lakeland Conference in four of his first five seasons and won the title for the first time in school history in 1976. He went on to compile a record that included nearly 50 victories in eight seasons. His 1976 Middies are memorable not only for their Lakeland Conference title, but also because they overcame a frustrating series of injuries to do it.

After eight seasons in which his Middies crafted a 48-30-2 record, Phil was named an assistant principal at Midview. He retired after serving 14 years as assistant principal and 32 total years in education. He put together a record of 77-44-8 in 13 years as a head coach and was inducted into the Lorain County Football Hall of Fame in 1989.

Phil has never ventured far from Midview and Lorain County. He graduated from Wellington High School in 1955, where he earned 11 varsity letters in four sports. And he has to be one of the few people – if not the only one – in the county to have played for and coached Lakeland Conference football champions. A four-year football starter, he played on the Wellington team that won the first Lakeland crown in 1954.

Phil enjoys retirement, following Midview and Ohio State athletics and the activities of his grandchildren in middle school, high school and college.

Phil and Carole live in Elyria and have a son, Scott, and daughter, Sally, both Midview graduates.
