Bio

Bob Mahl was one of the most versatile athletes in school history. A football, basketball and golf standout, he earned three letters in each sport.

Bob was an excellent golfer, playing on Coach Henry Smith’s conference championship team and was a starter on Midview’s 1969-70 Lakeland Conference Champion basketball team, which finished with a 15-3 mark.

Bob became a starter at halfback his junior year, after his three touchdown performance in the second half of the fourth game against Vermilion. He carried the ball seven times for 110 yards and three touchdowns. He finished the season with 482 yards in 54 carries for an 8.9 average. Bob caught twenty passes for 236 yards for an average of 11.3 yards per reception and scored 12 touchdowns for a total of 72 points. He returned 4 kickoffs for 56 yards and punted 33 times for 1099 yards for an average of 33 yards per punt.

Bob’s senior season showcased him as a triple threat back. Playing quarterback, he completed 102 of 186 passes for 54.8% for 1029 yards for a 10 yard average per reception. He accounted for 1299 yards of net total offense despite a knee injury that hindered him during the ensuing basketball season and well into his college career.

Bob had an outstanding career at Ashland College. A three-year starter on both the golf and football teams, he made a big impact on the Eagles football team as a 6’2”, 210-lb. tailback. He averaged over 5 yards per carry in his career at Ashland and was on his way to set a school rushing records if his reinjured knee hadn’t curtailed his junior season after rushing for 640 yards in 120 carries for a 5.3 average.

Bob Mahl was one of the finest football players in Midview High School history and his ability was certainly confirmed by his college success. He received several inquires from Pro-teams including New England, Cincinnati and Dallas.

Bob is a CPA and a corporate controller. He lives in Montgomery, Texas with his wife.
