Bio

Ed Kubuski came by his coaching career with some impressive credentials. After graduation from Grafton High School, he earned his teaching degree at Kent State and played on the 1942-43 basketball team. He played on several minor league baseball teams beginning at the age of 19. Mainly a pitcher he played in the New York Yankees and Washington Senators farm systems traveling throughout Maryland and several other destinations.

Always proud of his military service, Ed was a staff sergeant in the Army and served in Germany in World War II. He was a squad leader in the 28th infantry division.

After prior coaching stints at Elyria Catholic, where he met his wife Bernadine, the school secretary, and Grafton, “Big Ed” was chosen as the first basketball coach at the newly consolidated Midview High School. His Midview Teams accumulated a record of 54 wins and 19 losses. In addition to his coaching responsibilities which included baseball in the early 1970’s, he was the school’s first Athletic Director. He later ran the scoreboard and clock at basketball games and also “ran the chains” at home football games. He had at one time taught Industrial Arts, Girls Physical Education and Health classes.

His last stop was teaching Driver’s Education classes which were a big hit with the students who enjoyed his sense of humor which was legendary. He loved to make people laugh and counted newly hired teachers as his favorite “victims”. Among his favorite quips were “See you round like a doughnut” and “Save your string and we’ll have a ball”. Midview High School was more enjoyable to its students and faculty because of Ed Kubuski.

Ed and Bernadine were the parents of Tom, Margie and Nancy. It is only fitting that the Kubuski Memorial Gymnasium stands as a monument to his legacy.
