Bio

Mike Hayes earned two letters in basketball as a 6’3” guard/forward. An excellent shooter and strong rebounder, he was Lorain County honorable mention as a senior and played in the Lorain County All Star game. He played on the 1993-94 sectional championship team that finished with a season’s record of 15-7. Mike pitched a no-hitter in baseball as a freshman and was first team all-conference as a senior and played in the Lorain County all-star game. The team was sectional champions and finished the year with a 16-6 record.

Mike Hayes was Midview’s most valuable football player in a prolific senior year. He was All-Erie Shore Conference first team punter, wide receiver and second team place-kicker. He was first team All-County punter and wide receiver. He was the first team All-District, All Northeast Region and All-State punter. He set single game records as a wide receiver for most yards received, 162; and punted for an average of 49 yards per punt. Mike set season records for most passes caught, 46; receiving yards, 721; and punting average, 43.9. He was the first player in Erie Shore conference history to be named all conference at three positions, wide receiver, punter and place kicker. Mike was also the only athlete in the conference to be picked to the all star team in all three sports.

Mike continued his record setting pace at the University of Akron. In his sophomore year, he averaged 46.3 yards on 9 punts against Virginia Tech, including a 71 yard punt. He had 14 punts of 50 yards or more. In his junior year he was the 16th rated punter in the nation and was ranked #1 in the MidAmerican Conference. Mike averaged 50.1 yards on 8 punts against eventual national champion Nebraska. He averaged 43.8 yards per punt for the season and was named to the All-Academic All-Mac first team.

Called upon to “pooch” punt, he averaged a modest 41.7 yards per punt his senior year. He was again named first team All-Mac Academic and All GTE/CoSida Academic All-District and was nominated as an All American.

Mike is a physical therapist and is an assistant coach for the MHS football team.
