Dick Hawke started every game in his four years at Eaton High School. He scored 17 points as a 15-year-old freshman against Clearview and finished the year with 120 points. Joined by his freshman brother Dave, his sophomore year, he scored 193 points. John Sakola, former Rocky River High School and Wittenberg University cage star, became the new coach for the Brown and Gold and coached them to a 17-1 season in Dick’s junior year. Eaton, according to the UPI Columbus Bureau, was the highest scoring team in Ohio, averaging 58 points per game. Senior center Art Rice was the leading scorer with 239 points followed by Dick with 201, Dave Hawke with 102 and David Cook with 151 points. Dick was voted to the All-County First Team.

A deadly two hand set shot helped Dick Hawke score 409 points for a 19.4 points per game scoring average his senior year at Eaton High School. He was often referred to in the Chronicle Telegram coverage of local sports as one the best players in the county. The team won 19 games and lost 2. They averaged 56 points per game compared to their opponents 33. Dick was joined on that team by his brother Dave 279 points, and Carl Ziehm 285 points, members of the ‘40-‘41 Eaton 2003 Hall of Fame team. Other members were, Bob Rothel 285 points, Martin Blaine 53 points, Wayne Tite, Steve Balogh and Harold Tompkins. Dick set a new county record that year, when he scored 42 points in a 87-45 win over Lorain St. Mary’s. He was selected to the All-County First Team for a second time. Dick Hawke scored 923 points in his career at Eaton High School.

Dick Hawke passed away on March 13,2004. His wife, Betty, lives in Grafton. They have two sons, one daughter, eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
